On the occasion of the twelfth Meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice of the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, in collaboration with other members of the Consortium of Scientific Partners of the CBD , organized a training course for the participants in the SBSTTA 12 meeting.
The workshop was held in the Grand Amphithéatre of the Museum located at 57, rue Cuvier, Paris, 5th District. Next to agenda items of SBSTTA-12 (the ecosystem approach, the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation and climate change), a range of other subjects (e.g. Article 8(j), indicators and scenarios, inventories of biodiversity, taxonomic promotion, and access and benefit-sharing) were also programmed for the training course.
For one of these workshops ‘Promotion of taxonomy’ the Belgian GTI National Focal Point was invited by Dr S. Tillier of the MNHN to prepare a presentation dealing with ‘capacity building for taxonomy’
The workshop ‘Promotion of Taxonomy’ was set up bilingually, whereby the morning sessions were in French and the afternoon sessions in English.
The following, 30 minutes long, presentations were given:
- 10h30-11h00: Haüser, Ch. The role of taxonomy for implementing the CBD: The Global Taxonomy Initiative and Beyond.
- 11h00-11h30: Tillier, S. The relevance of taxonomic institutions, especially natural history (research) collections for conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.
- 11h30-12h00: Samyn, Y. and Van Goethem, J.L. Taxonomy ... an old friend with new tricks.
- 12h00-12h30: Hirsch, L. New ways of access to and use of taxonomic information: the role of digital biodiversity/taxonomic data for research and other end users.
