Current student projects in the lab include work on the biogeography ofcarnivores and their parasites, the behavior of male ants, theconsequences of the cryptic invasion of a termite specialist ant, andmodeling of the interactions between seed dispersers and seeds.

Labprojects include global analysis of the biogeography of ants, modelingconsequences of climate change for insects, pests and diseases, and aneffort to work with NASA to highlight areas where discovery of new speciesis most likely.

PhD position: Plant Systematics, Department of Botany, Oklahoma State University

A PhD position is available to apply genomic approaches to plant systematics in the laboratory of Dr. Mark Fishbein at Oklahoma State University. This is an NSF-funded collaborative project with Dr. Aaron Liston and Dr. Richard Cronn at Oregon State University. The position involves sequencing the complete genome of Asclepias syriaca (milkweed) and chloroplast genomes from ca. 150 species of Asclepias and relatives. Research will involve field collecting plant samples, laboratory preparation of sequencing templates for the Illumina platform, and phylogenetic analysis. Opportunities exist for participation in genome assembly and annotation, and the development of an independent project in the area of genome analysis. A B.S. degree in Botany, Biology, Bioinformatics, or Computer Science is required; a M.S. degree with specialization in phylogenetics, plant taxonomy, or bioinformatics is desirable.

The position can be filled as early as January 2010 and is funded by a combination of research and teaching assistantships. The Oklahoma State University Botany Department (http://botany.okstate.edu) has a core strength in plant systematics and evolution coupled with active collaborations in the areas of systematics and molecular biology across many departments, including Zoology, Plant and Soil Sciences, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, among others. The New York Botanical Garden, a National Historic Landmark and one of New York City's premier cultural institutions seek a full-time Curatorial Assistant for Laboratory Collections to join our Science team.

The successful applicant will participate in a project to curate and database genomic DNA and tissue samples in the NYBG DNA Bank. Duties will include updating storage materials, integrating and organizing samples, capturing specimen information in a complex data base from which specimen labels will be produced, and retrieving and/or processing voucher herbarium specimens as needed. The incumbent will assist in the integration of existing databases into a single platform, testing newly developed data entry screens, and in developing educational and informational content for dissemination in various formats. We seek a resourceful individual who is well organized and able to work independently. Candidates should have a B.A., B.S., M.A., or M.Sc. in biology, preferably in organismal botany or zoology; experience with contemporary natural history collections management and/or databasing is preferred.

Postdoctoral position (bivalves) at the Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago

A postdoctoral position is available for a full-time researcher in the Bivalves-in-Time-and-Space project.

Initial appointment for this Field Museum-based term position is made for 12 months, with opportunity for performance-based renewal for up to 22 months.

Starting salary is $40,000.

The position is part of a larger NSF-funded project (http://www.bivatol.org/BiTS/) that aims to develop bivalves as a model clade for macroevolutionary studies, taking advantage of their excellent fossil record to test methods of molecular clock dating, ancestral state reconstruction, historical biogeography, and detecting spatial and temporal trends in evolution. The specific responsibilities of this particular position will involve morphological and taxonomic studies of Recent and fossil members of the marine bivalve family Veneridae. The successful applicant will also participate in regular meetings and possible collaborations with other members of the research team (S. Steppan, D. Jablonski, P. Mikkelsen, J. Huelsenbeck, J.J. ter Poorten) who are working on corresponding morphological, paleontological, molecular, and computational components.

Opportunity will exist for "first-authored" project development as well as for exposure to additional (e.g., molecular) techniques.

The candidate should have the following proven attributes:
PhD in relevant area
Experience in morphological techniques and approaches
Strong interest in species-level diversity
Capacity to work in a team as well as independently
Availability in early 2010

The successful candidate will join a trans-disciplinary team of faculty, staff, and students dedicated to modernization and advancement of descriptive taxonomy through innovation in cyberinfrastructure, e-monography, and collaborative taxonomy. Position will be filled at Assistant or Associate Professor rank, salary commensurate with experience. Requirements include an earned doctorate in insect taxonomy and demonstrated commitment to comparative morphology, taxonomic revisions, and collection growth and enhancement. Core research efforts are expected to be collaborative: organizing and leading a 'taxon knowledge community', seeking competitive external funding, leading expeditions, producing online monographs, and working with a team of scholars, scientists and engineers to identify and remove impediments to taxonomy through technology and practices. Candidate will teach a course in area of expertise.

The Biodiversity Institute of Ontario at the University of Guelph offers a postdoctoral position for the barcoding of Lepidoptera

DNA barcode studies employ a 650-base sequence near the 5' end of the mitochondrial gene COI to differentiate animal species. Over the past five years, over 750K DNA barcode records have been collected from approximately 100K species.

This information is building a capacity to rapidly identify organisms, aiding efforts to monitor global biodiversity patterns. The International Barcode of Life Project (www.ibolproject.org), scheduled for launch in late 2010, will allow coverage in the DNA barcode reference library to rise to 500K species by 2015.

Species of Lepidoptera have long been a major focus for DNA barcoding, and DNA barcodes are now available from nearly a quarter of the world's 160K described species. We are seeking a postdoctoral fellow to advance efforts to build comprehensive barcode coverage for the Lepidoptera faunas of Australia and North America. This position involves four key activities linked to project organization and oversight:

Interact with external collaborators to obtain samples/specimens
Coordinate the submission of samples/specimens to the Canadian Centre for DNA Barcoding (www.dnabarcoding.ca), located within our Institute
Perform quality checks such as comparing image records to the collaborator-provided taxonomy and examining genetic distance trees built from the barcode records
Organize and manage data in the online DNA barcoding database, the Barcode of Life Data Systems (BOLD; www.boldsystems.org)

Candidates for this position should have a strong background in Lepidoptera taxonomy; experience in molecular phylogenetics is also desirable. The DNA barcode data gathered in this work will provide the opportunity for high-quality publications in areas such as integrative taxonomy, evolutionary biology, molecular ecology, or phylo-geography depending upon the expertise of the successful candidate.
