Abstract (as taken from original proposal)

Studies on zooplankton, especially rotifers, are scarce in Viet Nam. Apart of a dated study by Shirota (1966), hardly any studies are available and relevant taxonomic expertise is lacking locally. To remedy this situation, and to contribute to the management of Lake Thuy Tien, a taxonomic study on the rotifers of the lake will be conducted. The lake, situated upstream of Hue city in the Perfume river basin, is a crucial element in the hydrology of the basin, especially by its contribution of relatively pure water to the river. It is furthermore an important venue for local tourism to the residents of Hue city and surroundings. Balancing these services requires a science-based management of the lake, which relies on an understanding of its functioning.

The present study will contribute to this by performing a taxonomic inventory of the lake’s rotifer community, a key component in the functioning of aquatic systems.
