Abstract (as taken from original proposal)

Minimal support is presently provided for fish taxonomic and biodiversity studies and collections in Vietnam, resulting in reducing research interest by young scientists. Knowledge is unclear, scant, and national expertise is in danger of being lost.

Three areas of capacity-building are needed:

  1. Taxonomy of freshwater fishes in Vietnam is poorly know, but an important research area for young scientists, as freshwater species are the most threatened, and have great value in terms of economic development. Training and capacity development in taxonomic methodology, especially morphological aspects, are essential requirements for building national biodiversity and conservation research, and improving the quality of biodiversity and ichthyological education.

  2. The University's significant museum collection of fishes is being degraded due to absence of curation knowledge, skills, and information management. Skills are needed to ensure that this research collection is upgraded and made available for national and international science, and student education

  3. Opportunities for technical cooperation between Vietnamese scientists and international scientists in taxonomy and curation management are needed to accelerate and anchor conservation science in Vietnam, on par with international standards, and stimulate continuing scientific information exchange.

The capacity building attachment with RBINS is seen to directly address these three areas.
