Abstract (as taken from original proposal)

The present project pretends to increase the knowledge about taxonomy of marine nematodes from Cuba. Three main objectives are addressed: (i) description of new taxa for the science, (ii) gain knowledge about management of collections, and (iii) obtain a practical training in molecular techniques. The three objectives require of support of the expertise of Belgian colleagues and the use of capacities from some institution. Main targets include access to literature and microscopy, exchange with a curator, visit to a specialized collection, and practical work with samples for molecular barcoding. The results in short/medium term should be the publication of discovery of new taxa, the consolidation of a reference collection of nematodes in Cuba following modern methodologies, and the application of molecular techniques to the taxonomy of the genus Terschellingia. Transference of gained knowledge should be performed trough exchange with Cuban colleagues but also with teaching activities with BSc and MSc students.

Training location: Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, Brussels.
