Abstract

Terrestrial molluscan (snails and slugs) diversity is high in the east African region (Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda) with over 1063 documented species. But the information is mostly based on snails. Slugs fauna remains very poorly explored and not emphasised in surveys and there is a substantial taxonomic impediment to further studies. The impediment is in the form lack of taxonomic expertise, and published record and specimens are scattered and mostly inaccessible for Africa. There is a need to build expertise in the taxonomic techniques for slugs which will facilitate more studies to be done and conservation efforts.

Location of training: Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, Brussels.

Read Ms. Ngereza 's GTI reports to learn more about her training.

During a first visit Dr. Van Goethem of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences thaugt Mrs Ngereza hwo to dissect slugs (right); for her second visit drawing with the camera lucida was on the agenda (right) (pictures by A. Réveillon and Y. Samyn)
